Dutch words in this post
Hover over an underlined word in the text (tap it on a phone) and see what it means straight away.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| dagtekening | the date of the letter · The date the deadlines start counting from |
| BSN | citizen service number |
| IBAN | bank account number |
When we first released Letrin, it was only on iPhone. The question we heard most often was this one: "When is it coming to Android?" The answer is now: Letrin is live on Google Play.
Anyone with an Android phone can now read the same letter, in the same way, in their own language.
What changes on Android?
What the app does stays the same. You take a photo of the letter and read, in your own language:
- what the letter says,
- what is asked of you,
- the deadline for it, and a reminder as the date gets close,
- if you want, a draft reply in Dutch to send to the organisation.
All 19 languages are on Android too. You still do not need to open an account, give an email address or create a password.
Privacy on Android follows the same rule
The rule we set when we built Letrin holds on Android too: the photo of the letter does not leave your phone.
- Text recognition (OCR) runs on your phone's own processor.
- Your name, your address, BSNcitizen service number, IBANbank account number, your phone number and case numbers are still found and covered on the phone.
- You see the text that will be sent on a confirmation screen; nothing is sent until you approve it.
- Only this blacked-out text goes to the server, and it is not stored there.
We described these steps in detail in How Letrin reads a letter: the photo never leaves your phone.
We also made one decision that is specific to Android: Letrin is not part of Android's system backup. Your history sits in an encrypted database on the phone, and that database does not go to Google's backup servers either. The price is this: when you move to a new phone, your history and settings do not come with you, and the app starts from scratch. If you want to keep an important explanation, share it or make a note of it.
Payment and subscription
The first explanations are free on every phone. For more, you can buy a credit pack or subscribe. On Android, payment goes through your Google Play account.
You manage the subscription in the Play Store, not inside the app: Play Store, Payments and subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
What do you need?
A phone with Android 6.0 or newer is enough. You can search for "Letrin" on Google Play, or tap the download button on this site; if you tap it on an Android phone, the Play Store opens directly.
The paper still has the last word
The explanation is generated by artificial intelligence and can make mistakes. Always check dates and amounts against the letter itself, and remember that the deadline runs from the date of the letter (dagtekeningthe date of the letter · The date the deadlines start counting from). Letrin is not legal, tax or immigration advice; in a real dispute, Juridisch Loket and the municipality's sociaal raadslieden are free.
If you run into a problem on Android, write to us. We want the app to work the same way in both stores, and we learn that best from the bugs you see.
